As the year draws to a close, Agate announces a brief respite and takes some time to look back at everything we have done in the past twelve months. This pause isn’t just a moment of rest but a strategic intermission—a deliberate step towards rejuvenation and cultivating fresh inspiration for the forthcoming year.

This year we’ve embarked on a transformative journey, unveiling a bold new business direction in February. Agate aspires to evolve into a global game development partner and focus on creating larger scale games (A to AAA) while contributing to a better game ecosystem in Indonesia. By adopting this strategy, Agate reinforces its worldwide industry presence. With a dedicated team of 250+ experienced professionals, Agate seeks to deliver top-notch services in the international game development landscape.

Forging Global Presence

2023 was a year for Agate to look at how we forge a global presence. As part of our commitment, Agate participated in more than >30 industry events across the globe, effectively connecting and sharing insights on our expertise in Full SKU, Game Art, Game Porting, as well as Gamification. With our primary office situated in Bandung, Indonesia, we are helped by our international representatives in different countries such as Canada, Germany, and South Korea to support amplify our global presence.

Gamescom Asia 2023

Besides our team participating as attendees, our Chief Strategy Officer, Cipto Adiguno, participated as a panelist in the Gamescom Asia 2023’s discussion on “Building a Thriving SEA Gaming Ecosystem Together.”

Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX) 2023

In the annual event organized by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics in collaboration with the Indonesian Game Association (AGI)—Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX) Business and Conference 2023—our Chief People Officer, Aditia Dwiperdana, is one of the speakers at the conference discussing the topic: “The Importance of Team Culture in Game Studios: The Secret Behind Successful Studio.”

In partnership with Epic Games, Agate held a networking event that served as a vibrant platform for fostering connections and camaraderie among Indonesian game companies and its ecosystem. The joyous atmosphere was enhanced by the presence of >70 gaming companies.

Indonesia-Europe Business Forum (IEBF) 2023

Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, our Chief Executive Officer, Shieny Aprilia, represented us at the Indonesia-Europe Business Forum (IEBF) 2023 and shared insights about the Indonesian gaming industry, as well as our journey as a global partner, particularly for European companies.

Tech in Asia Conference 2023

Our sub-brand in gamification service, Level Up powered by Agate, opened an interactive booth with VR experience and hosted a press conference in Tech in Asia Conference. The press conference was focusing on the gamification trends anticipated for 2024 and introduced the Level Up Gamification Framework.

Welcoming New Partners, New Adventures

Agate collaborated with Sekuya, a leading gaming social world company, to transform the gaming industry through metaverse adoption. This collaboration leverages Agate’s game development, game art, porting, and blockchain technology as well as Sekuya’s gaming social world vision to create a seamless and immersive gaming experience for players worldwide.

Agate and ISKRA, a single-destination platform designed for streamlined entry into Web3 gaming with participant rewards, uniting their strengths for a shared purpose. The collaboration is set to bring forth ‘Atma: Battle of Souls’, an exclusive game on ISKRA’s platform.

This past year we also celebrated the highly anticipated global launch of a sequel to one of Agate’s internal IP games, Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story 2 across all consoles, and kicked off the new IP project codenamed Project Dead with PQube. This collaboration is built on the foundation of trust established during previous ventures, where Agate successfully crafted games with global recognition.

This year, Agate joined as a Global Growth Development Partner of ZEPETO (Naver Z), a 3D avatar creation app and virtual world platform. Agate’s role in this partnership centers on contributing to the enrichment of ZEPETO’s “World” contents.

ifland is SK Telecom’s metaverse service that offers a range of features for social networking and is growing into a globally accessible service fueled by cooperation with various partners. Throughout this year, Agate and ifland are actively exploring potential opportunities to establish an optimal form of collaboration.

Health Heroes: Nutrihunt

In January, our sub-brand in gamification service, Level Up powered by Agate, collaborated with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition and released a scan application to get nutritional info from barcodes on food or beverage product packaging called Health Heroes: Nutrihunt.

Genom Heroes

Genom Heroes is a form of collaboration between our sub-brand in gamification service, Level Up powered by Agate, with Philia IT Solution. It is an ambitious human genome project aiming to position Qatar among the pioneering countries in the implementation of precision medicine by utilizing knowledge about genes.

Eizper Chain PVP

Our Full SKU team developed a mobile game called Eizper Chain PVP. It is a multiplayer 3 vs 3 action-packed arena where players battle it out to be the winner by collecting points.

Graycraft

Supporting Gray’s strategic initiative to develop an original game using their NFTs, we created Graycraft, a fast-paced 2D multiplayer mecha battle browser game.

Live Ops Services: Shellfire

Collaborated with a state-owned information and communications technology enterprise and telecommunications network in Indonesia, our Full SKU team delivered a Live Ops Services named Shellfire in March.

Memories

We released the highly anticipated sequel, Celestia – Chain of Fate Season 2 (Part 1), as the latest addition to our visual novel mobile game.

Saakuru

Released in May, Project EOS is a collaboration between Agate and Saakuru to create Saakuru Metaverse. We build Project EOS as a multiplayer experience that will keep players coming back for more.

MetaOne Video Advertisement

We created a video advertisement for MetaOne, a one-stop shop for everything web3, offering a user-friendly and secure wallet for gamers, creators, investors, and anyone else interested in exploring the decentralized web.

Valthirian Arc: High School Story 2

This year, Agate successfully launched Valthirian Arc: Hero High School Story 2 across all consoles. Extending the legacy of our internal IP, this game serves as the sequel of the first Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story, with its origins traced back to the days of Flash games.

Neon Blight

Neon Blight is an action-adventure game developed by Bleeding Tapes and published by Freedom Games. Our porting service helped port this game to Nintendo Switch in this August.

Erajaya

Our sub-brand in gamification service, Level Up powered by Agate, created a game to celebrate an Indonesia-based company engaged in the distribution and retail of mobile communication products in Indonesia, Erajaya’s anniversary, where players can play a quiz and answer questions. The game is integrated with Eraspace’s mobile app and website.

Starcade

Starcade is a game that replicates the arcade experience into a mobile game which was released in November. To date, this digital arcade game has been downloaded more than 10,000 times.

Rifstorm

As the co-development partner of Riftstorm, a “Diablo with Guns”, cooperative top-down action shooter game owned by Mythic Protocol, Agate supported a pre-alpha playtest on Steam, drawing in 5,000 players joined in the one-week playtest. Riftstorm has been validated by its network of publisher partners all around the world, with highly positive feedback.

ZEPETO: BFF Signal

Agate, as one of ZEPETO’s Global Growth Development Partners, launched BFF Signal in the ZEPETO World, attracting more than 200,000 visits from more than 87,500 players worldwide within less than four weeks since its launch and winning the heart of its players by winning Player’s Choice and Most Attractive World in November.

Exploring Various Genres

This year, we created various prototypes in various genres to hone our developers’ skills. Here are the standout projects for this year.

Elven Dungeon

In April, we created Elven Dungeon to demonstrate our expertise in making fantasy-themed games while at the same time increasing our capabilities in developing games by exploring plugins on Unreal Engine 5.1, which we can use in other projects. In this project, the team implemented Dungeon Architects, Ultra Dynamic Sky, and Rush Camera.

Unreal Engine 5 PCG Houdini

In July, we refined our skills in utilizing the Houdini plugin from the Unreal Engine, a powerful tool that helps optimize asset management.

Cyberclash

In September, we created Cyberclash to improve the overall capability of developing games. With this project, we tried to make a solo battle royale game prototype for PC within 1.5 months using Unreal Engine 5.1. We successfully achieved the target by implementing Lyra, 3rd person shooting template from Unreal Engine, using ready-to-use assets from Unreal Marketplace, and character animations from Mixamo.

Fostering the Growth of New Talents, Inside and Outside

For years, Agate, through the Agate Academy, initiative has been contributing to the growth of the industry’s talents with over 2,000 alumni, 20 mentors, and 10 hiring partners. It’s a long-term effort to cultivate a sustainable game development talent ecosystem in Indonesia that thrive in global competitions. Some of our highlights throughout 2023 are:

Internal Training

Agate Academy actively contributes to the growth of Agate’s crews by honing their technical abilities and interpersonal competencies. In the year 2023, a variety of training programs are offered for Agate’s crews, covering training in mastering Unreal Engine and game design, as well as leadership skills.

This year, our Jr. Technical Artist, Muhammad Salman Farizi, succeeded in getting certification as an Unreal Authorized Instructor.

Partnerships

  • Unreal Sharing Session from Unreal Engine Evangelist
    Epic Games’ Jack Condon, an Unreal Engine Evangelist, came to Agate and shared technical advice on Unreal Engine with our crews.

  • Fresh Graduate Academy Digital Talent Scholarship (FGA DTS) Game Incubation
    Agate Academy partnered with the Ministry of Communications and Informatics of Indonesia to establish a game development boot camp for fresh graduates which divided into two phases. A total of 100 participants joined the boot camp, grouped into 20 teams.

  • Kampus Merdeka
    Agate joined forces with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia for the “Certified Independent Study in Game Development” program as part of the ministry’s “Kampus Merdeka” program, equivalent to 20 credits.

  • National Working Competency Standards (SKKNI)
    We contributed to the development of National Working Competency Standards (in Bahasa Indonesia: Standar Kompetensi Kerja Nasional Indonesia), a standard document for Indonesia’s education curriculum.

Agate Game Course

Expansion and Training Initiatives

  • In 2023, the Agate Game Course has notably expanded its offerings, growing from 4 courses in 2022 to 8 courses. Moreover, Agate Academy has extended its reach by providing specialized training sessions.
  • These sessions cater not only to students but also to vocational-school teachers, playing a pivotal role as a recognized partner by Center for Quality Assurance Development in the Maritime, Fisheries, Information, and Communication Technology Vocational Education Sector (BPPMPV KPTK) for 3D art training.
  • As part of this initiative, Agate Academy has successfully educated and instructed 72 teachers, furthering its impact in the education sector.
