Responsibilities
- Create stylized anime 2D textures for 3D props and environment assets, translating the intended art direction into cohesive and visually appealing textures.
- Create stylized anime tilable textures and trimsheet textures to support 3D environment artists in modular environment workflows.
- Paint and refine color, value, material definition, surface variation, and hand-painted details directly on 3D model UVs.
- Ensure textures enhance the model’s form, depth, silhouette, readability, and visual identity without relying on excessive realistic detail.
- Collaborate closely with 3D Artists, Art Leads, Technical Artists, and Designers to ensure textures are consistent with the project’s visual direction and technical requirements.
- Optimize and prepare textures for real-time game production, including appropriate resolution, UV usage, texture formats, and material requirements.
- Deliver work according to schedule while actively participating in feedback, iteration, and production reviews.
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional experience as a 2D Texture Artist, 2D Artist, or equivalent role in game development
- Have a strong portfolio showcasing 2D environment illustrations, and ability to create anime-like background illustrations.
- Strong practical experience with either Photoshop, Clip Paint Studios, Substance Painter, or other equivalent 2D painting and texturing software.
- Able to create stylized textures for 3D assets, with strong understanding of color, value, lighting, material definition, and controlled surface detail.
- Strong understanding of how 2D texture painting supports 3D form, ability to use color, gradients, highlights, shadows, and painted details to enhance volume and readability.
- Have a basic/fundamental understanding of using Blender or other 3D software to preview the texture that you have made (simple modeling, UV, etc.)
- Able to adapt and maintain a consistent stylized texture language across characters, props, and environments while following established art direction.
- Proactive communicator who can effectively collaborate with 3D Artists and other production teams, give and receive constructive feedback, and iterate based on visual and technical requirements.
- Willing to work in Agate Office
Pluses
- Strong experience with hand-painted and stylized texture workflows, including painting directly on UV layouts and using baked information as a starting point.
- Strong experience with using procedural node-based texture creation workflows like Substance Designer, InstaMAT, or other similar applications.
- Understanding of PBR and non-PBR stylized workflows, including how albedo, roughness, normal, and other texture maps contribute to the final appearance.
- Full understanding of game art pipelines and texture optimization, with experience integrating and reviewing textured assets in Unity, Unreal Engine, or similar game engines.
