Indonesia, June 2nd, 2022 – PT Agate International, commonly known as Agate, announced that its Board of Directors and Board of Advisors have appointed Shieny Aprilia as Chief Executive Officer on June 1st, 2022. Shieny previously held the position of Chief Operating Officer at Agate.
As a founding member and information technology graduate from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Shieny initially took on the role of programmer, before transitioning into business and management. Her illustrious career includes titles such as game producer, business development specialist, VP of Enterprise Business Division, and Chief Marketing Officer.
In 2019, she was entrusted with the role of Chief Operating Officer, overseeing all business operations within Agate—which by then includes over 200 professionals who handle both consumer business and enterprise business. Since then, Shieny has also been easing into the role of CEO by sharing several responsibilities with the former CEO.
When COVID-19 hit the world and the video game industry, Shieny’s prudent leadership and strategic management of Agate’s operations were substantial in leading the company into recovery. As companies began to look into game-based solutions to empower remote work, Shieny managed the teams within Agate to answer the industry needs—earning Agate some of its highest projects at the time and avoiding massive layoffs.
Shieny’s appointment as the CEO is a part of Agate’s strategy to strengthen its foothold as a reliable development service provider amidst the increasingly fast-moving industry. With more companies looking to expand into the web3 space, Shieny will lend her judicious leadership and business expertise to enable more people and organizations reach their goals.
One of Shieny’s first decisions as CEO is the expansion of Agate’s offerings to include metaverse services. This decision seeks to integrate Agate’s experience in both developing consumer games and game-based solutions into metaverse services, bringing a balance between utility and entertainment.
“I’m forever grateful for the trust that Agate stakeholders have in me. I’m proud to be a part of Agate, a powerhouse in the Southeast Asian game industry and gaming community. I’m also overjoyed that we are able to achieve our founding dreams to a where everyone has the chance to prove themselves and earn a living in the video game industry, regardless of their background or gender.
“After building the Indonesian video game industry, we are now ready to establish and reach bigger goals. We aim to overcome the hit-driven nature of the game industry, and continue building our company in a more sustainable way. We believe it could be done by becoming a reliable game development partner for web3 and game companies globally.
“I believe Agate is in a unique position to empower the web3 and metaverse space—due to our experience in building games for various demographics and purposes. With the metaverse developing, my vision is to turn Indonesia into more than a target market, but as a source of talents and ideas. Within the next decade, I also envisioned that many popular games in the world are made by Indonesian people and companies, with Agate leading the charge,” said Shieny.
This move also holds a broader implication for the industry. As a woman, Shieny joins the ranks of Indonesian female CEOs—which amounts to a measly 2% of all Indonesian CEOs according to a 2020 report by the World Bank. Shieny’s new position will allow her to shape a more diversified and equal Indonesian video game industry.
The previous CEO of Agate, Arief Widhiyasa, will assume his new role as chairman of Agate, providing oversight and advice for the business.
“I’d like to thank all Agate crew members, partners, clients, and stakeholders for putting their trust in me for the last 13 years. I have the utmost confidence that Shieny will lead Agate to even greater heights. She has always been there at the forefront of Agate with me, and I’m excited to see her use her expertise and wisdom to lead Agate in a greater capacity,” said Arief.
